El Correo (Spain)
We created this graphic as a part of our paper's information about this climatic combat over a bridge in Iraq.

Our designers had a lot of photos for the page too, but we thought it was interesting to give the readers a sense of place and the tactics of this operation, in addition to the close-up photos. All the research was done inside the graphics department (as usual). In this example we mostly use the AP and NYT wire stories, and we carefully studied the photos, video footage and maps of the area.

One of our main problems so far is that our only sources for information are the wire services. But, we try to re-elaborate it in a different way. Whenever it's possible we try to produce graphics with our embedded correspondent, too.

The three artists in our small team worked on this graphic: Fernando G. Baptista, Josemi Benitez and Javier Zarracina. It took about 6 hours and was published on the same day of the story.

We're having good reader feedback about these kind of war graphics. We're trying to avoid the "Map and arrows and flying around planes" formula and trying to create graphics that tell stories to our readers.
